Completely Terrible
Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the blow of this unmitigated catastrophe.

In the end, you are left with a sense of confusion. You start ruminating about the purpose of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just living in a simulation gone wrong?
Catastrophe of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck without warning, destroying entire towns in its path. Buildings collapsed like sandcastles, and the chaos that erupted was deafening. Worst Day Ever
It all started with an case of morning hair. I couldn't figure it to look right. As I was scrambling out the door, I stumbled and dropped my lunch all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for work.
I in a state of utter panic. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was pointless.
The rest of the day was just as bad. Everything. I couldn'tconcentrate.
By the time I got home, I was utterly defeated. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as an epic fail.

A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
